Global Education Gives Students New Perspectives

Studying abroad is an experience often associated with four-year degrees. At Southeast Community College, the Global Education program does community college different by giving students the skills they need to explore different cultures and learn about international environments.

In May, a group of students traveled to Athens, Greece as part of the program. Upon arrival, students were immediately immersed in Greek culture.

“Everyday felt like stepping into a new world,” said Laila Al-Mugotir, a business student on the trip. “Whether it was exploring ancient ruins, wandering through markets, or simply taking in the scenery. I loved how each place had its own personality and rhythm.”

These trips abroad are the definition of the experiential learning students receive at SCC. Al-Mugotir and her fellow travelers toured the Acropolis, watched live glass-blowing demonstrations, and experienced a Greek meze-style dinner.

“We learned meze meant making multiple small dishes to be shared and eaten slowly while enjoying each other’s company,” said Eden Enevoldsen, who is pursuing her global studies certificate. “We ate while getting to know each other and learning about the different dishes from the chef.”

Enevoldsen found that while there were locations that were popular for tourists, the group still found authentic restaurants and experiences that made them feel connected to Greek culture. Much of the trip was spent exploring ancient sites like the Sanctuary of Demeter, Olympia, and Tiryns.

“One of the most memorable things I learned was the depth and richness of Greek mythology,” Al-Mugotir said. “Standing in those places helped me understand how mythology shaped Greek identity, architecture, and daily life.”
