Solving Medical Mysteries

Our Medical Laboratory Technology program prepares you to become a healthcare detective by performing critical tests to help doctors diagnose and treat diseases. Through hands-on training in phlebotomy, clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology and transfusion services, you'll develop the skills needed in hospital labs, clinics and research facilities. You’ll play a critical role in patient care as approximately 70% of medical decisions based on laboratory results. PROGRAM GOALS


Laboratory Proficiency

You will learn how to perform routine clinical laboratory tests in areas such as hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, microbiology and other emerging diagnostics. You'll develop skills to make decisions based on predetermined criteria.


Communication Excellence

You will develop strong communication skills in order to interact with the healthcare team, and the patient. You'll learn to clearly communicate complex test results to help with patient care decisions.


Technical Expertise

You will perform diverse functions in pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes. You'll gain skills in specimen collection, processing, testing and reporting results with accuracy and efficiency across multiple laboratory areas.

We maintain an articulation agreement with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. UNMC accepts SCC's credits toward their Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science Degree Advancement Option, allowing graduates to advance their education while working.

CAREER OUTCOMES

Medical Laboratory Technician

Perform a variety of diagnostic medical laboratory tests on patient specimens to assist physicians in diagnosing and treating diseases. Technicians conduct hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunohematology and immunology tests.

Upon successful completion of the program, and passing the national certification exam, graduates may find employment in all but two (2) states.

The states that accept the national certification may have additional licensing fees and/or exams depending on the state’s laws and guidelines.
