Speech Contest Rules

    Tues., Feb. 20, 2018; Room V-102; 4 p.m.

    (3:45 p.m. registration/rooms assigned)

    1. Submit the completed entry form with a copy of your speech or outline in-person or via email by midnight Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2018, to:
    2. This is an informative speech contest. Your speech will need to teach the audience about objects, people, procedures, events, ideas, conditions, or issues, etc.
    3. The time limit is 5-7 minutes. If your speech runs long, after 9 minutes you will be asked to stop speaking.
    4. You must be present 15 minutes before the contest begins for registration in room V-102 on the Lincoln Campus. Participants will then be assigned a room in which they will present their speech.
    5. The preliminary round will begin at 4 p.m., at the Southeast Community College Lincoln Campus, 8800 O St. Participants will deliver their speech to a judge and approximately six contestants.
    6. Participants will stay for the entire round and listen to all speakers in their group.
    7. The speaker order is determined randomly, and you must speak in the order chosen.
    8. You will have up to 5 minutes to set up your visual aids. If you are not prepared after the 5 minutes, you will be asked to give your speech without your visual aid.
    9. You will be allowed to use the multi-media equipment provided in the rooms at SCC.
    10. Immediately following the 4 p.m. preliminary round, participants must return to room V-102 to see if they have advanced to the final round.
    11. Students who advance to the final round will give the same speech to a new panel of judges and an open audience in rooms V-103/V-104.
    12. The final round will begin shortly after the preliminary round ends and the judges’ results are tallied.
    13. There is no dress code for speaking, however, speakers should remember that appearance is part of the speaking process.
    14. Awards will be given to the top six performers.

    Award/Prizes

    • 1st Place: Tuition for one 4.5 quarter credit class (will be deposited into the student’s account)
    • 2nd Place: $150 Gift Certificate to SCC Lincoln Campus Store
    • 3rd Place: $100 Cash
    • 4th Place: $75 Cash
    • 5th Place: $50 Cash
    • 6th Place: $25 Cash
