Alcohol and Drug Counseling

    Program Description

    The Alcohol & Drug Counseling Program prepares students for careers in the addiction and recovering professions. We train students to work in community agencies; helping individuals overcome addiction and the challenges involved in recovery. This certificate is for students who have already earned an associates degree or higher or who seek to earn their Alcohol & Drug Counseling License.

    You will study the physical, mental, and social aspects of alcohol and drug use and dependency, including drug classification, the effects of drugs, and withdrawal covering signs, symptoms, and behavior patterns as well as treatment issues related to dependency. You will also take psychology courses and learn the listening, communication, and counseling skills needed to support others.

    Courses in this certificate program meet requirements for the education required for Alcohol & Drug License for the State of Nebraska and prepares students to take the Nebraska credentialing exam and become provisionally licensed as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

    You are a good fit for the Alcohol & Drug Certificate if you:

    • If you have been clean/sober for a minimum of 3 years.
    • If you already have a 2- or 4-year degree or
    • If you have worked in the Treatment profession

    You can start the Alcohol & Drug Certificate program in the Fall or Spring terms. Follow these steps to apply:

    2. Need help exploring career opportunities or navigating the admissions process? Schedule an appointment with an Admissions Counselor.
    3. Ready to apply? Complete an Application for Admission.
    4. Submit ACT, SAT, Next Generation Accuplacer, or Accuplacer test scores (reading and math) or official college transcripts showing completion of post-secondary coursework in English and math to the Admissions Office at any SCC location.

    We will prepare you to be a vital member of an individual’s journey to sobriety as an alcohol and drug counselor in the community who provides direct supportive services promoting wellness, and self-awareness. Salary ranges can vary widely depending on the city and many other important factors, including education, certifications, additional skills, the number of years you have spent in the profession. Recent Alcohol & Drug Certificate program graduates report an average starting salary of $26,312.

    Curriculum is approved by the State of Nebraska, Department of Behavioral Health.
    Southeast Community College is a State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement Institution (NC-SARA) institution. As such, SCC is unable to offer online or distance courses to students in the following areas at this time: American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
