Program Description

The Web Development & Design Certificate is an efficient, yet comprehensive program focused on teaching web development and web design.

The program provides students with fundamental web development principles by teaching the core development languages of HTML5 and CSS3 while also introducing students to the scripting language of PHP through the exploration of the web content management system WordPress. Students will be introduced to User Interface and User Experience principles as they relate to web design and practice these principles while learning and working with Figma, the industry-leading interface design software.

The certificate is offered through the Graphic Design | Media Arts program.

Students in SCC’s Web Development & Design program pay attention to detail and craftsmanship and have a desire for continual learning. Students in the program also are critical thinkers, are self-driven, have good time management skills, and are comfortable working at a computer for extended periods. The ability to receive constructive feedback is also important.

The Web Development & Design Certificate is best for individuals currently employed as designers and seeking to expand their skills, or graduates from a design program that did not extensively cover web design or development. Existing knowledge of fundamental design principles is important as the courses do not introduce these topics (such as typography, contrast, and hierarchy) but instead demonstrate how they apply specifically to web design.

Individuals with either professional or educational graphic design experience have a higher chance of succeeding due to the quick pace of the certificate. Unlike SCC's two-year graphic design program, this certificate does not extensively cover design and visual communication basics.

No prior web development knowledge (HTML & CSS) is required as students will learn these web development basics during their first semester.
