The Horticulture & Turfgrass Management industry is very diverse and ever evolving. Despite the ever-changing industry, SCC has a long-standing reputation of providing students exceptional career and technical education, preparing them to enter the job place or transfer to a four-year university. The Horticulture & Turfgrass Management program combines classroom theory with hands-on experience in various settings throughout the Beatrice Campus, including a two-hole golf course. Successful completion of the program prepares students for a variety of careers, both indoors and outdoors, including landscape design and construction, greenhouse manager, nursery manager, and maintaining residential, golf course, and athletic field turf areas. Our curriculum has a great base of fundamental theory combined with various hands on experiences. We want our students to be able to understand the fundamentals, while gaining experiences to be functional horticulture or turfgrass managers. We use our SCC Beatrice campus as our living laboratory; students will assist in everything from landscaping central campus to mowing and setting up our very own golf course.
Horticulture: Pursuing a career in horticulture can take you down many different career paths. Students graduating from our program will have the knowledge and skills to succeed in many different careers, including landscape construction and installation, greenhouse manager, nursery manager, and many more.
Turfgrass Management: The turfgrass industry as a whole has a broad focus including home lawns, athletic fields, sports complexes, golf courses, and many others. Students completing our program have the opportunity to compete for jobs at over 700,000 athletic field facilities and over 15,000 golf courses in the United States alone. There is a very high demand for technically trained students to manage and maintain turfgrass areas on golf courses and athletic fields. Students wanting to start their own business will have the knowledge and ability to start their own commercial or residential lawn care company after completing our program.
